Foot Valve

Pumps, Pump Accessories

What is a foot valve?

A foot valve is made of Cast iron and has a leather flapper valve to help prevent the pump from losing its prime when shut down.

Where do you install the foot valve?

Foot valves are installed onto the suction hose end which is then placed in the liquid being pumped.

How does a foot valve work?

When the pump is operating, the leather flap valve opens, allowing water to enter the suction line. When the pump stops pumping, the weight of the water in the hose forces the leather flap valve to close, keeping the suction hose full of water. The built in suction strainer will help to keep foreign objects (rocks, leaves, etc.) from entering into the pump during operation.
